My teaching pursues the value of a liberal education. We read, discuss, and write about texts to develop skills needed to think critically and act well. My courses invite students to connect historical texts to their lives - practicing ‘living like’ ancient philosophers, for example - and philosophy with classics, literature, and other humanistic studies. Recent courses include surveys and seminars in Ancient Philosophy, Beauty and the Good Life, and How To Be Happy? Feel free to email me for syllabi or materials. I am proud to have received several teaching awards, including both the UH Mānoa Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching and College of Arts, Language, and Letters Excellence in Teaching Award.

Teaching in Yale’s Directed Studies Program deepened my commitment to a broad liberal arts education. In that spirit I volunteer as a tutor with the Catherine Project, leading discussions of influential books with learners around the globe.

A captive student.
